Placement Methods
Students will be subjected to a placement test prior to joining our programmes to best determine the type of class suited to their level.
Placement tests will usually last anywhere between 1 ½ hours to 2 ½ hours depending on the length of the placement tests and will typically assess more than 1 component of a student’s language proficiency.
Assessments
In view of the need to constantly monitor the students’ progress in the English Language, USM @ China has made the decision to assess students’ language proficiency on a weekly basis.
The assessments from the second to the third week of the month – labelled as Formative Assessments – consists of bite-sized, easy-to-follow questions with the goal of establishing whether one’s learning objectives for the week have been attained.
The assessment conducted on the final week of the month – labelled Summative Assessments – are assessments modelled after IELTS with the purpose of familiarizing students with the actual examination and assessing whether students are ready for the actual test.

3 | Formative (Listening, Reading, Writing) |
